Working Smoke Alarms:  It's The Law

Effective March 1, 2006, it is the law for all Ontario homes to have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas.  With this previously announced Fire Code amendment now in effect, it is hoped there will be a reduction of the number of preventable fire-related injuries and fatalities.

The amendment covers single family, semi-detached and town homes, whether owner-occupied or rented.

To increase awareness about the amendment and the importance of working smoke alarms, the Office of the Fire Marshal launched an ongoing provincial awareness campaign called Working Smoke Alarms:  It's The Law, in December, 2005.  In addition to its focus of smoke alarm requirements and responsibilities, the campaign will educate the public about smoke alarm technology, installation and maintenance.

The Fire Department offers free home inspection on ensuring your home has the appropriate amount of working smoke alarms present in the home.  To schedule a appointment, or if you require any clarification, please contact the Fire Chief Wayne McIsaac or the Fire Department Administrative Assistant Charlene White at: (705) 434-5055.

Residents and Businesses are encouraged to contact their Insurance providers to ensure that the Water Shuttle Tanker Evaluation has been considered towards their policies.

Note:  This evaluation is only valid within 8 km of the Everett Station 1 & Loretto Station 2 for dwellings, and 5 km for commercial properties.

Fireworks By-law

Fire Control By-law

Campfires can be a wonderful way to end an evening and a very joyful event.  The Fire Department does not want to take that enjoyment away from any of our residents.  However rules and guidelines must be followed to ensure that campfires are used safely and efficiently to minimize hazards.

  • Campfires are to be used for the purposes of heating and/or cooking and should be kept to a maximum size of 1 cubic metre or smaller
  • Campfires should be used in a fire pit or approved fire location
  • Campfires are to be attended by an adult at ALL times
  • Campfires should be positioned a minimum of 10 metres from any structure (fences, sheds) and a minimum of 30 metres from any dwelling
  • Campfires must have a water source beside the fire at all times
  • Campfires must be completely extinguished when finished and not left to smolder
  • Smoke from campfires should not interfere with neighbouring residents and the same rules for burning complaints are applied
  • Use good judgement, call us to answer questions, and remain Safe!
